Better Sleep 10 Things You Didn’t Know

Over the last 25 years, sleep research has been devoted to uncovering just how important better sleep is to our lives and general health.  From sleep position analysis, to the effects of sleep apnea – sleep research covers topics across the board.

At Tricots Liesse sleep is our recent obsession. In developing our new Mattress & Sleep Fabrics line, we delved deep into what makes for a good night’s rest.  In honour of May, the official Month of Better Sleep, we have put together a list of our favorite interesting and bizarre sleep facts!

  1. Sleeping Our Lives Away. The average person spends 1/3 of their lives sleeping.
  2. Snoozing the Alarm. Dysania is the medical condition for not being able to get out of bed in the morning – think about that the next time you hit the snooze
  3. Delayed Gratification. Humans are the only animals that willingly post-pone sleep.
  4. Blind Dreams. People who are born blind do not have visual dreams. Instead they experience other senses like emotion, smell and sound.
  5. Nightmare Feelings. The most common negative emotion during a nightmare is not fear. Instead people usually feel confusion, guilt and sadness during bad dreams.
  6. Sentimental Sea Otters. Sea otters sleep holding hands, so they don’t drift away from each other.

  7. Cat Naps. The average cat spends 2/3 of their life sleeping.
  8. Post-lunch Nap. 2:00 AM and 2:00 PM are the times of the day when our bodies experience natural fatigue, which is what is responsible for the after lunch drowsiness.
  9. Night Shifts. Night shift work is something the body never fully adjusts to. Studies show it causes an increased risk of chronic illnesses like cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases.
  10. Color Dreams. Before color television was invented only 15% of people dreamt in colour, now 75% of people dream in colour as a result of the innovation.
